Palaiokipos Agricultural Olive Oil Cooperative A’
The Palaiokipos Agricultural Olive Oil Cooperative A’ is a historic olive producers’ cooperative in southern Lesvos, based in the village of Palaiokipos. It was founded in 1922 with the purpose of collectively processing olives and marketing the olive oil of its members, while keeping alive the tradition of the Gera region. Today, it counts hundreds of active members from all the villages of Gera, who join forces to support the local product and the community.
The Cooperative is certified for the production of Protected Geographical Indication (PGI) “Lesvos” olive oil, reflecting its commitment to high standards of quality and safety at every stage of production. Its main activities include operating an olive mill for olive pressing, producing extra virgin olive oil (including organic and PGI-certified), and distributing products on behalf of its members. The Palaiokipos Agricultural Olive Oil Cooperative A’ has been officially recognized as a Producer Organization in the olive oil sector, confirming its leading role among olive producer entities in the region.
Within the framework of OLIVEUP, the Palaiokipos Cooperative represents the primary production sector and provides the main field of implementation for the project’s innovative actions. With the active participation of its producers, it functions as a living laboratory where best cultivation practices are tested and evaluated, ensuring that the project’s results address the real needs of olive growing. The Cooperative’s substantial contribution lies in bridging research with practice, disseminating new knowledge to local producers, and enhancing the competitiveness of olive oil production in the area.
